Where can I buy GBL?

I’ve heard many people have been scammed while attempting to buy GBL online recently.  So I’ve decided to suggest some reputable online shops and make you more aware of the scam sites and companies that sell lower quality than they pretend to.  I think GBL has become the scammers choice recently due to the price and demand for GBL.  I believe the legal issues surrounding GBL in various countries are stopping people from reporting the site to the relevant authorities, so the sites are sticking around which is clearly not good for us GBL buyers.  The vendor that I buy GBL online now from is All-Chemicals.com.  They sell consistently 99.9% pure GBL.  My personal recommendation. Especially for people living in the USA and Canada, I have added some new information on the bottom of this page, this is because the recommend vendors beneath don’t ship to the US of A and Canada.

 

Gamma-Butyrolactone

Gamma-Butyrolactone is a colorless liquid which is oily, has a weak odor, and is water soluble. It is actually a fairly common reagent in chemistry, and a common solvent. It can also be used as a stain remover, an aroma compound, a paint stripper, a superglue and as a solvent in some capacitors, namely aluminum electrolytic capacitors.

Gamma-Butyrolactone goes by several names, including GBL, butyrolactone, 1.4-lactone, 4-butyrolactone, 4-hydroxybutyric acid lactone, and also gamma-hydroxybutyric acid lactone. Its CAS number is 96-48-0 and its RTECS number is LU3500000. It can be found in samples of wines that are unadulterated, and it seems that this is how it is produced naturally. It can be synthesized from gamma-hydroxybutyric acid by removal of any water, or even by distillation. GBL can also be obtained through the oxidation of tetrahydrofuran.

Gamma-Butyrolactone is a chemical which has been used for years as a solvent. As a solvent, it has found many uses. It has been used in pesticides as well as for photochemical etching. It has been used in the electrolytes of small capacitors and batteries. It has been as a viscosity modifier in polyurethane. It has found a useful place in the practice of surface etching metal coated plastics. It has also been used in organic paint disbursement products for water soluble inks. It has been used in pH regulators, in the dying of polyamide fibers and wool, and as a catalyst during curing procedures. It can also be used as a curing agent for coating systems and/or urethanes and amides.

Gamma-Butyrolactone has found many uses in our modern world, especially in the fields which require a potent solvent. For uses such as pesticides, Gamma-Butyrolactone is considered one of the best chemicals there is. It is very usable, not extremely flammable, it is not super-reactive and is actually relatively safe for the environment. GBL is also a great ingredient for things like superglue and paint stripper because of its unique chemical qualities which make it so flexible and able to perform tasks that require a very powerful, yet usable solvent. While GBL is not extremely flammable, it is combustible and is therefore usually stored in metal containers like lacquer thinner usually is. You should always refer to the safety instructions for specifics regarding the safe usage of GBL, as with all paint thinners and strippers, this product is after all a chemical, and should be handled with responsibility.

It is also advisable to anyone who might be handling GBL to look up the material safety data sheet produced for it. This can give you detailed information abut how to safely store, use, and dispose of the chemical. Recommended storage for the chemical includes containers made from carbon steel, stainless steel and Ni. The chemical, for reasons of combustion and harmful affects, should never be kept in any other than the appropriate container. Remember to always use paint strippers and superglue with caution, as while these are not extremely powerful chemicals, we tend to underestimate just how toxic they can be. Always use GBL in accordance with the appropriate safety guidelines, do not play with your own safety.

 

1,4 Butanediol

So, is GBL actually better than 1.4 Butanediol as a cleaner? Well, many say that it is. Both are used as industrial chemicals: 1.4 Butanediol is used as a solvent, it is used in the manufacturing of some plastics, it is used when manufacturing elastic fibers and even for polyurethanes. The chemical is also used in organic chemistry in the synthesis of y-butyrolactone, which is GBL.

GBL is used as a solvent and reagent in many chemical reactions. It is also used as an aroma compound and a stain remover. It also functions as a paint stripper and even as a solvent in some wet aluminum electrolytic capacitors.

In the area of industrial cleaners, many say that GBL is better than 1.4 Butanediol. While 1.4 Butanediol is a very effective cleaner, GBL is, without a doubt, the solution more and more people are going with. This is due not only to the chemical makeup of GBL, but also due to the nature of the chemical. As always, experience is what counts and, when it comes to these two chemicals, it’s precisely experience which has made is clear that GBL simply outperforms 1.4 Butanediol.

Both of these chemicals are considered dangerous to some degree, so handling them with responsibility is always a recommended approach. GBL is not extremely flammable, but that doesn’t mean that you should leave your guard down. It should definitely be kept away from open flames. It is recommended that the material safety data sheets be read by anyone handling either of these chemicals, because even though they are not considered extremely dangerous or flammable, they are chemicals and should be handled the right way.

It is also recommended that people who work with GBL wear safety glasses, a lab coat and a vapor respirator. Gloves are also recommended. In case of spills, you should consult the material safety data sheets as to how to go about cleaning the spill.

The availability of 1,4 Butanediol online is fairly plentiful with a nice selection of overseas supplier but there are also scams out there. You can buy 1,4 Butanediol online just like you can buy GBL online just make sure you use a reputable dealer.

GBL has been proven to not only clean ink spills, but other tricky substances as well. 1.4 Butanediol is also an effective cleaner, but simply not as effective as GBL. As a cleaner, 1.4 Butanediol simply does not have the potency needed for some tasks. Just remember to always handle chemicals with the necessary safety precautions in mind, as while chemical such as 1.4 Butanediol and GBL are very helpful, they can definitely be dangerous.

 

Clean Wheels With GBL

Alloy wheels get filthy over time from brake dust, dirt and will eventually corrode due to salts on the road. There are plenty of alloy wheel cleaners on the market but there is one cheap solution that is overlooked: Gamma-Butyrolactone, or GBL for short.

I found GBL many years ago when I used to be a self-employed automobile detailer.  I tried many different alloy wheel cleaning products in the time I spent cleaning cars.  I just wanted to make cleaning wheels easier on myself and as you may have found out, cleaning dirt from complex wheel designs can be hard work due to curves and contours on the wheel.

You will not find GBL offline easily so it is best to buy GBL online where there are many reputable companies around offering it at various prices. The bottle sizes start at 125ml and go up to 100 litre barrels. The prices drop considerably with bulk buys.

A 125 ml bottle will last a great deal of time as I find diluting GBL with water in a 1:5 ratio produces the best results. You don’t want to use concentrated GBL on your alloy wheels as it will remove the finish from your wheels exposing them to corrosion.

Make sure you take appropriate precautionary measures whilst using GBL as you are dealing with a powerful solvent. Use gloves and be very cautious with regards to your eyes.

The results below are from a customers car a while back, usually built up brake dust is extremely difficult to remove, especially on this particular wheel design. I managed to remove almost all of it, using just a small amount of diluted GBL, a cloth and a soft brush.
